  The first large-scale carbon dioxide (CO2) circulating power generation test unit in China, independently developed by China Huaneng Group, successfully completed a 72-hour trial run and was officially put into operation at the Huaneng Test Base in Xi'an on December 8th. With an operating power of 5 megawatts, this unit boasts the largest capacity in the world. The localization rate of its core equipment has reached 100%. Over 400 technical patents have been applied for, breaking the long-term monopoly of foreign companies in this field.

  Using carbon dioxide as a power generation medium is an important transformative technology at the forefront of the world. Currently, the United States has a 0.2 megawatt technology test platform, and countries such as Japan, France, and Germany are fully engaged in the research and development of this technology. China is in the leading position in this technology in the world.

 

 

  Compared to traditional steam power generation, carbon dioxide cycle power generation units possess three major advantages: Firstly, they are compact in size. For the same installed capacity, the volume of a carbon dioxide power generation unit is only 1/25 of that of a steam unit. Secondly, they are highly efficient. At a temperature of 600℃, their power generation efficiency is 3 to 5 percentage points higher than that of steam units. Thirdly, they produce less pollution. Coal-fired power plants adopting carbon dioxide units can reduce carbon emission intensity per unit of power generation by 10%.

  The successful commissioning of this unit has verified the industrial feasibility of supercritical carbon dioxide cycle power generation technology, which is expected to fundamentally change the traditional thermal power generation technology that has relied on steam as the mainstream working medium for over 140 years. It marks that China has taken a leading position in the field of supercritical carbon dioxide cycle power generation technology in the world, providing an important path for further improving energy utilization efficiency and achieving the "dual carbon" goals.
